Getting Started on Cost-savings Initiatives

When applied to cutting tools, a coating can prolong tool life and improve performance. Several different coating options are available, and to choose the right one, you need to understand their makeup and their intended uses. We give an overview of cutting tool coatings in a separate post, but let’s look closely at one carbon-based coating.
Diamond-like carbon coating is an “amorphous carbon,” meaning it has no crystalline structure, and that aids in its low coefficient of friction (basically, it can be very slippery). The “diamond-like” name results from the process that gives the coating its extreme hardness. When applied to a cutting tool, a DLC shines because of its very high hardness and anti-stick properties.
This coating is an excellent addition to tools used for machining aluminum and composite materials, especially where tight tolerances and long tool life is needed. Its high hardness and lubricity allow the coating to help remove chips and reduce chip adhesion to tools. That makes it a good choice for dry cutting operations.
While choosing the right coating is important, it’s also critical to choose a cutting tool manufacturer with the knowledge and experience to apply any coating properly. If you want to consult with experts on tool coatings, reach out to MITGI, and we will be happy to help you select the right coating for your material and application.
